A visit to the Basque country means discovering an exceptional heritage <\/strong>, where every stop has its own share of surprises in store. Just a few minutes from the campsite, Saint-Jean-de-Luz charms you with its colorful harbor, its Saint-Jean-Baptiste church – where Louis XIV was married in 1660 – the Maison de l’Infante and the Maison Louis XIV<\/a>. Along the coastal path<\/strong>, you’ll reach Pointe Sainte-Barbe for a spectacular panorama of the bay and the Socoa fort. <\/p>\n\n\n

Climb to the top ofLa Rhune<\/strong>, the Basque country’s highest peak at 905 meters. On foot (allow 2 hrs 30 for the round trip) or aboard the famous little cogwheel train <\/a>from the Col de Saint-Ignace, the reward is the same: a breathtaking 360\u00b0 view of the ocean and the Pyrenees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heritage lovers won’t want to miss the Ch\u00e2teau d’Urtubie<\/a>, a medieval monument still inhabited today, located 3 kilometers from Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Further south, the ch\u00e2teau-observatory of Abbadia<\/strong> in Hendaye<\/a> overlooks the Basque corniche with its neo-Gothic facades. In Bayonne, classified as a Ville d’Art et d’Histoire (City of Art and History)<\/strong>, stroll through the narrow streets of Petit Bayonne, admire Sainte-Marie Cathedral and discover the city’s chocolate workshops, a specialty for centuries.The Basque Country boasts four villages labelled “Most Beautiful Villages in France”<\/strong>: Ainhoa<\/a>, Sare<\/a>, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port<\/a> and La Bastide-Clairence.
